dam

The origin of Lake Barkley is very astonishing in deed. Back in 1966, the Lower Cumberland Project was derived by the Army Corp of Engineers but later became what we call today as the Barkley Lock and Dam. The purpose of this project was to improve less flooding and create more hydropower. In order to accomplish this, TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) purchased over 170,000 acres of land. This would then cause two small towns (Eddyville and Kuttawa) to be completely moved in order to build Lake Barkley. Once the towns were relocated, development on the man-made lake was started.

Since its development in 1966, Lake Barkley has grown to become "One of the World's Largest Man-Made Lakes." The lake itself stretches over 58,500 acres with a shoreline that reaches a massive 1,004 miles. It has since grown to become one of Kentucky's Best Recreational Spots for boating, fishing, hiking, hunting, and relaxation. It was only inevitable that Kentucky State Parks would begin development of Lake Barkley Marina.
